The most recent event of hooliganism by few Hindu ultra nationalist Sangh parivar sponsored youths in a book release program of eminent writer activist Arundhuti Roy at Indian habitat Center; New Delhi once again reminds us the increasing threat of shrinking democratic space in this country.
The right to freedom of expression is fundamental to any democracy and a fundamental freedom lay down in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, as well as in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and in the constitution of India. Freedom of Expression is also a requirement for the realization of a vibrant society, which makers of this country once thought.
But, the increasing fascist activities of Sangh Parivar and its extended arms like VHP, Bajrang Dal or Ram Sena and people in power are all set to hamper this very diverse mosaic of this country with purpose to intimidate those voices of protests and dissent over government policies, particularly Operation Green Hunt. Attacks on eminent activists like Arundhati Roy or Binayak Sen are part of these lager conspiracies only.
NCHRO, as an organization strongly believes expression of diverse points of view is of the highest importance, not only for those who espouse a cause or position and then defend it, but also for those who hear and pass judgment on that defense. NCHRO is concerned about shrinking freedom of expression in country and strongly criticizes the latest attack on Arundhuti Roy. We, therefore, appeal to people and all other like minded organization to come forward and stand together united to protect our hard earned democratic rights.
