A common thread appears to have emerged from a series of communal incidents in Gujarat over the last two weeks, with residents of the areas affected blaming an alleged nexus between local VHP activists and police in triggering the violence. All the clashes were sparked by crackdowns on the sale of beef during Navratri and Bakrid — the slaughter of cows is banned in Gujarat.

Hyderabad: Scores of rights activists, including revolutionary writer Varavara Rao and Jeetan Marandi, folk artiste from Jharkhand, were taken into preventive custody after they tried to hold a seminar here Sunday.

Pratyamnaya Raajakeeya Vedika (Forum for Alternative Politics), a loose conglomeration of different mass organisations and individuals, wanted to mark the 10th anniversary of the formation of the CPI (Maoist) with a seminar at the Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram followed by a rally and a public meeting at the Indira Park in the city on Sunday.

Church body calls for anti-AFSPA meet PDF Print E-mail

SHILLONG: A church body has arranged for a public meeting at the Durbar Hall of Mission Compound here on September 11 to seek repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, which is operational particularly in Manipur and Kashmir, as an expression of solidarity with all those who are for repealing of the "draconian act".
