New Delhi:Once again, Maharashtra Police has violated fundamental rights of citizens with callous impunity. Dr. G.N. Saibaba, well known human rights activist and now working as Professor in Delhi University was arrested on the sly by Maharashtra Police on 9th Friday at Delhi. Dr. Saibaba who suffers from 90% physical disability and hence wheelchair- bound, is yet made a target of the Anti-Naxal Unit of the Maharashtra Police. Fake allegations of Maoist links are imposed on him in a routine manner. For the last several months; Prof. Saibaba has been undergoing a series of acts of harassment by the police. In 2013 his house was illegally raided and his laptop and a hard disk were taken away by them. Professor Saibaba is a well known academic and very much a public intellectual, apart from being a distinguished human rights activist. He has been on the forefront of struggle against neo-imperial and capital specific development. The police by this arbitrary and forcible arrest has shown sheer disrespect for the human rights and are treating him like a criminal. It is reported that he is charged under the infamous UAPA which has been extensively used to suppress legitimate people’s struggle .NCHRO strongly condemns the arrest of Prof. Saibaba. We are also of the opinion that the police ought to follow the directions of the Supreme Court issued in D K Basu Case . We demand unconditional and immediate release of Dr Saibaba. We appeal to all HR organizations and activists to come together against this act of lawlessness and high-handedness on the part of the state, carried out in the name of Anti-Naxal operations.
