Mumbai (Women`s Feature Service) - In India, a disabled girl-child is usually at the receiving end of a lot of contempt and neglect. Women with disabilities have been consistently denied their rights. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court (SC) of India recently allowed a 19-year-old mentally challenged orphan girl to carry on with a pregnancy resulting from a sexual assault. The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling had earlier ordered medical termination of pregnancy (MTP).

Disabled friendly websitesDisabled people are facing problem in accessing websites as Indian government is not strictly following the regulations set to make the website disabled-friendly and accessible. In February, Indian government had assured that at least 50 important government sites would be made disabled-friendly and accessible but so far only few sites have made an effort. "We were pressurizing the government earlier this year to adopt WCAG 2.0 for making all Indian websites accessible to people with visual impairment.

PATNA, India — A 12-year old Indian snack vendor had to have his leg amputated after railway police threw him out of a moving train when he failed to pay them 10 rupees (20 cents) as a bribe, officials said Friday. Mohammed Shahabuddin's left leg was almost severed and had to be amputated below the knee, said N.K. Mishra, a surgeon at a state-run hospital in Muzaffarpur in eastern Bihar state.

Attitudes are the real disabiiityPATNA, 10 Sep 2009:  Disabled campaigners in eastern India on Tuesday defended parking their wheelchairs on a busy rail track as trains sped towards them. The 12 demonstrators wheeled themselves onto the line in the state of Bihar in a mark of protest against armed robbers who had mugged a group of disabled sportsmen travelling on the route at the weekend. One man was shot and seriously injured in the attack. The protesters - most of them young students - blocked the line in the state capital Patna for nearly an hour on Monday, to the fury of police who pulled them to safety just in time.
