Shahid Azmi, a Career produced and consumed by Judicial System PDF Print E-mail
Op Ed

Shahid AzmiThe murder of defense counsel of Fahim Ansari and those accused in Malegaon blast of 2006 is really very disturbing. It brings to mind how some of those alleged to be involved in 1993 serial blasts were bumped off by targeted assassination. The death of Shahid Azmi in the evening of February 11, 2010 is in a series of lawyers thrashed, shot at, injured or killed across the country in the aftermath of bomb blasts. Azmi is the third lawyer killed in Mumbai. In such cases the alleged terrorists were invariably suspected to be Muslims and if any Muslim lawyer showed any desire to defend the accused he was subjected to two heart wrenching problems. One, he would be targeted for engaging himself in antinational activity. Two, he would run mortal risk while discharging a duty that the constitution of the land allows him.

Now wearing a Burqa can be a crime PDF Print E-mail
Minorities

Wearing a burqa can be a crimeThe French parliament is preparing to pass a resolution to denounce the wearing of burqas in France. It aims to pass a law afterwards that will actually outlaw the garment. This is  the first time that women would be penalised for wearing a burqa. In 2004, France banned Muslim girls wearing the hijab in schools. It argued that these religious symbols interfere with its commitment to secularism and its secular culture. In fact, nothing happens without political ideology being behind it. This measure is being championed by right-wing politicians who are exploiting anti-Islam feelings in France among a section of people under the cover of secularism. However, the socialists are opposed to any ban on the burqa, though they are also not in favour of women wearing burqas. They feel women should be discouraged rather than banning the burqa covering the face.

Internet Freedom and Human Rights 2.0 PDF Print E-mail

Internet in IndiaIs unfettered Internet access a fundamental human right? Given their recent -- and widely covered -- spat with China over censorship laws, Google appears to assert that Internet censorship is an important enough issue to pull out of the People's Republic altogether, even though China has the largest online community in the world.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also made clear in her address Thursday at The Newseum in Washington, D.C., that the Internet is a powerful tool for promoting democracy and human rights, and should not be repressed by any government or institution. (The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded on Friday, lashing out at Clinton's criticism and claiming the address was "harmful to Sino-American relations.")

But is Internet freedom itself a human right -- an entitlement that no just nation could infringe upon?
