July 24, 2003, Bhubaneswar:
A drunken man in Orissa wrapped a snake around his neck, kissing it repeatedly – then both reptile and human died.
The bizarre incident, which goes to show that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, was reported from a village in Bhadrak district.
Police said that drunken 50-year-old Kalindi Behera spotted a snake in the village field and picked it up.
He told a group of children that he was the Hindu god Shiv and could catch the snake with his hand.
He coiled it around his neck and danced around the field, kissing it.
The snake then bit Behera on the neck and chest and died.
Soon after, Behera, married with two sons, also fell down unconscious and died at the Bhadrak district hospital. – By Jatindra Dash
