The Orissa government placed under suspension three doctors of a government hospital for cutting off the palms and fingers of tribals who were killed in police firing at Kalinga Nagar in coastal Jajpur district last Monday.
The doctors cut off the palms during the postmortem. When the police handed over the bodies of the 12 tribals killed in the firing to their relatives on Wednesday after the postmortem, they found palms and fingers missing from five bodies.
The police and the Jajpur district administration admitted that the palms were cut off for better identification. The act has triggered strong resentment across the state.
Meanwhile, under tremendous pressure over the firing, the state government has transferred both the Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jajpur district. The names of the new Collector and SP have been announced and they were directed to report for duty as early as possible
