Thiruvananthapuram: The case of the tragic end of spiritual leader of Ezhava community and former head of the Sivagiri Mutt, Swami Saswathikananda, has taken a new turn amid fresh revelations that a notorious hireling was dropped in a car at the site of his supposed drowning on the banks of the Periyar River in July 2002.
Pavithran, the father of a youth slain by a police officer, had come out with the revelation that his son had told him before his death that he had dropped hireling Priyan at Aluva on the day the mutt chief drowned in the river. Swami Saswathikananda, who had arrived at the Advaitashramam at Aluva to attend the director board meeting of Sivagiri Mutt, had gone to the river and the tragedy occurred around 9.20am. Fire-force personnel said that Swami Saswathikananda was alive when they took him out from the river. However, doctors could not save his life after he was rushed to a hospital at Aluva. Ashram sources said the Swami had gone to take bath along with two disciples. However, he sent the two back saying he would return soon. The disciples standing on the bank of the river raised an alarm when they could not spot the Swami for a long time. They alerted the fire force personnel and the Ashram authorities. The death of Saswathikananda, who had returned from an extensive tour of Gulf countries along with Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) general-secretary Vellapally Natesan, came as a big shock to his followers. Pavithran said that the police officers never listened to his version. There was a possibility that his son knew something about a sinister plot and had been bumped off to suppress the crime. According to Pavithran, there must be some link between the mutt chief’s death and the presence of the hireling. The relations of the mutt chief had approached the court for a CBI probe in to the death. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan yesterday demanded that the Government should set up a new probe in the face of fresh revelations.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has urged the Chief Minister to institute a thorough investigation into the death of Swami Saswathikananda.
In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Achuthanandan said he was making this demand in the wake of new reports suggesting that Swami Saswathikananda, who was believed to have drowned in the Periyar while taking bath three years ago, was actually murdered.
He noted that the demand by Swami Saswathikananda’s mother for a detailed investigation into the incident had fallen on deaf ears. The new reports suggest that a hired goonda, wanted by the police in connection with the murder of a youth named Praveen hailing from Ettumanoor, had a role in Swami Saswathikananda’s death, Mr. Achuthanandan said
