White paper on Bhagalpur riots soon: Nitish
The 1989 riots had left 1,000 dead
Patna: Sixteen years since the communal riot in Bhagalpur shocked the nation, the newly installed NDA government in Bihar plans to bring out a white paper on the status of the cases and steps taken for rehabilitation of the victim families.
"We propose to bring out a white paper on the Bhagalpur riots, including the status of cases, steps taken for rehabilitation of the victims and to bring those guilty to justice", Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told reporters on Saturday.
Kumar said his party, the JD(U), had promised in its election manifesto to do justice to the victims of the communal riots in 1989 which had left over 1,000 dead "and we will not not go back on our promise".
Meanwhile, reacting to the government’s move to come out with a white paper on the riots, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, whose party’s government was often accused of going soft on the perpetrators said, "We saw to it that the guilty were punished."
