One killed in fire at cracker unit

Thiruvananthapuram: A 55-year-old man was killed when fire broke out at a fireworks manufacturing unit near Murukumpuzha in Mangalapuram police station limits on Wednesday.

The police identified the deceased as Madhavan Pillai, an employee of the unit. The police said large explosions rocked the area around 11.55 a.m. Local people who reached the spot could not access the building owing to intense heat, smoke and flames. The concrete building housing the unit partially collapsed in the fire.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and violation of the Explosives Act. The body of Pillai was being kept at the MCH for post-mortem examination.
