Life term awarded
THALASSERY: Five BJP-RSS workers were on Wednesday awarded life sentence and a fine of Rs.10,000 each in a case relating to the murder of a shopkeeper near Panur in 1995.
The five accused, P.M. Sathyan (36), V.K. Kunhikannan (45), P.P. Balan (39), V. Kunhikannan (36), and K. Shaji (30), were found guilty by the Additional District Sessions (Fast Track-I) judge A.A. Vijayan on January 16. The judge sentenced the five to five-year imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. They should undergo an additional two-year imprisonment if they failed to pay the fine. The judge also handed jail terms varying from six months to two years to them under various sections of the IPC. However, all the sentences will run concurrently.
