PALAKKAD: A convention organised by the Anti-Coca-Cola Samara Samithy at Plachimada near here on Friday demanded that Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited be closed.
A resolution adopted by the convention (moved by R. Ajayan, convener, Plachimada Solidarity Committee) also demanded that compensation be paid to the people of Plachimada who were affected by the functioning of the company. It said that the company’s exploitation of groundwater had resulted in the depletion of groundwater table in the area and pollution of wells, making the water unfit for consumption. Farmers in the area have also been affected. They do not get water for irrigation. The groundwater table fell sharply that the tubewells of some farmers have gone dry.
The convention opposed the reported move to shift the Coke plant to Kanjikode in Pudussery panchayat. The shifting of the unit will not solve the problem as the `Plachimada tragedy’ will be repeated in another place. The company should pack off from the country, the resolution said.
Vilayodi Venugopal, patron of the samithy, presided. Its convener Velur Swaminathan presented the working report of the samithy.
