Kollam, Kerala, Jan 20: The wife and mother of Naushad, who is facing an ”eye-for-an-eye” punishment in Saudi Arabia, today left for New Delhi to meet Saudi King Abdullah, when he visits the national capital next week and seek clemency.
Naushad’s wife Suhaila and mother Nabeeza Beevi, hope that the King would listen to their mercy plea and he would be pardoned. Suhaila and her mother-in-law, who left here by the Kerala Express said the Saudi King’s mercy was their last hope.
Naushad has been lodged in a Saudi jail for the past three years after a Sharia court gave an ”eye-for-an-eye” verdict, after convicting him of damaging the eye of a Saudi national in an altercation.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who had taken up the issue had faxed a message to the Prime Minister’s office regarding this. The Saudi King will be in New Delhi on a four-day visit from January 24 and would be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day functions.
After the matter came to light last year, the Kerala government and the MPs from the state had sought the Centre’s intervention to save Naushad.
