KOZHIKODE: The third anniversary of Muthanga tribal agitation and `Jogi’ remembrance meeting will be observed with various programmes by the Adivasi Gothrasabha and its political affiliate, Rashtriya Mahasabha at Aralam and Iritti in Kannur district for three days from February 17.
The Government will disburse title deeds to 1,000 tribal families at Aralam farm on February 17 as agreed at a discussion that the Adivasi Gothrasabha and Rashtriya Mahasabha leaders had with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram on January 18.
A high-level committee has been formed at the official level to expedite the land disbursement process in Wayanad district and the rehabilitation scheme by buying private plantations. The Chief Minister had promised at the meeting to withdraw all cases (except those being investigated by the CBI), especially those connected with the Muthanga agitation.
It has also been decided at the function to consider adivasi grama sabha system which is said to be a bulwark against alienation of tribal lands once the land is disbursed to tribals in the Aralam farm, C.K. Janu, leader of the Adivasi Gothrasabha, and M.Geethanandan, general secretary, Rashtriya Mahasabha, told reporters here on Friday.
Mr. Geethanandan said that the Government has taken a `big step forward’. "However, we are not fully satisfied with the steps taken by the Government. Agitation will be organised soon demanding withdrawal of cases taken by the CBI against tribal leaders in connection with Muthanga agitation," Mr. Geethanandan said.
The leaders said that as per the Government statistics, already 5,000 tribal families have been given title deeds in the State. The title deed disbursement by Tribal Mission under the Government at Aralam farm in Kannur district will begin from February 17. The Adivasi Gothrasabha and Rashtriya Mahasabha will kick off the Muthanga day observance on February 17 evening after the title deed disbursement programme.
`Bhoomipuja’ in accordance with tribal traditions will also begin from February 17 evening. Thousands of tribals across the State are expected to congregate at the Aralam Farm on that day for the puja. A seminar on `Advisai grama panchayat— law and possibilities," will be organised at Aralam on February 18.
