Nayak likely to file for anticipatory bail.
Sunday, January 22, 2006 (Mumbai):
Encounter specialist Daya Nayak is likely to move court to seek anticipatory bail after the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case against him and his wife Komal.
The ACB booked Nayak under the Prevention of Corruption Act and his wife for connivance for allegedly amassing illegitimate wealth.
An open inquiry instituted into the assets acquired by Nayak allegedly revealed that he possessed assets worth over Rs 40 lakh that were not matching his known sources of income.
These assets were 212 per cent more than his income sources, the ACB said.
The high-profile encounter specialist, who has more than 50 killings of underworld gangsters under his belt, is absconding, the ACB has alleged.
However, senior Mumbai Police officials said that Nayak was availing a sanctioned leave.
"I was told by the zonal DCP that Nayak had sought leave long back and that has been sanctioned by the DCP. I cannot comment if he smelt the impending action against him," Additional Police Commissioner (north region) T A Chavan said.
Daya alias Dayanand Badda Nayak, a sub-inspector with Mumbai Police is presently posted at Kandivali police station in north Mumbai for almost a year after he was unceremoniously shunted out of crime branch following allegations of corruption against him. (PTI)
