India ranks low in environment performance

New York: India ranked among the 20 lowest-scoring countries in meeting a set of critical environmental goals such as clean drinking water and low greenhouse-gas emissions, according to a study by two U.S. universities.

The pilot study `2006 Environmental Performance Index’ jointly produced by the Yale and the Columbia Universities, shows that just six nations — led by New Zealand, followed by five from northern Europe — have achieved 85 per cent success in achieving such goals.

The report has been reviewed by other specialists both in the United States and internationally. — PTI
