New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) In an unusual act, veteran Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Orissa Assembly J B Patnaik has written an article in the RSS mouthpiece "Organiser" on the need for a common minimum ideology of all political parties.
"There should be a common minimum ideology of all political parties and that should be service to the people", the former Orissa Chief Minister said in the latest issue of the weekly devoted to ‘Role of Ideology in Polity’.
He, however, reminded that "unlike the rest of the world, India has religious toleration. This is not so in Europe and Middle East countries. India has tolerated all religions, be it Islam or Christianity".
In his article, NDA Convener George Fernandes said, "ideology is to politics, what religion is to society".
BJD MPs Tathagata Satpathy and Prasanna Acharya and National Minorities Commission Chairman Tarlochan Singh are among the other contributors.
Former BJP MP and General Secretary of Jan Sangh Prafull Goradia in his article said, "the shocking defeat of the NDA in the Lok Sabha elections of 2004 was a reminder of how ideology was important. Unfortunately, the leadership felt that preserving the unity of the NDA was more important than the need for a return to Hindutva for the sake of safeguarding the party’s integrity". PTI
