The Allahabad High Court has rejected a writ petition seeking preparation and publication of voter lists nomination forms and other relevant papers in urdu in panchayat and local bodies elections.
The court also rejected the relief claimed by the petitioner that people well versed with urdu language are appointed as polling officers, translators at every polling centre and provide urdu voters list to recognised political parties alongwith Hindi voter lists.
A division bench comprising Justices S Harkauli and Vikram Nath passed the order on a writ petition filed by Uttar Pradesh Urdu Development Organisation and others.
The court observed since voter lists, ballot papers, nomination form, list of polling centres and list of contesting candidates are not covered by any of the seven items maintained in the notification of October 7, 1989, therefore, no such mandamus could be issued.
The judges, however, issued the mandamus to get urdu publication done, unless already done of each of the 9 rules/regulations in the official gazette within six months.
