VADODARA: It was a short but bitter experience for a city girl Mital Patel who married an NRI based in the US. Mital’s husband Hemal Patel allegedly did a vanishing act a month after the marriage.
This is the second case in a week, after Falguni Amin, a resident of Makarpura, lodged a similar complaint on Thursday. Mital’s father Madhukar Patel on Saturday lodged a complaint at Fatehgunj police station, according to which, Mital, studying in the third year at Dental College in Ahmedabad, married Hemal in December 2004 at a village in Sankheda taluka.
Police said H e m a l stayed in the village with Hital for a while, only to fly away to the US a couple of months later. Soon, Mital’s mother-inlaw Savita and father-inlaw Narendra too moved to the US. The three fled to the US saying that they w o u l d call Mital once t h e y r e a c h there. A few days later when Mital contacted Hemal over the phone, he said that he would not come back and she should look for someone else. Since then, Mital had been trying to contact Hemal several times over the phone.
But he remained incommunicado, after which the complaint was lodged. In the complaint, Mital’s father alleged that Hemal had started ill-treating her soon after the marriage, and complained that the marriage was forced on him by his parents.
The police complaint said that Hemal was introduced to the girl’s family as a computer engineer, but it later turned out that he was only a matriculate. The family ran a motel business in the US and had a house in Sankheda near here.
