CCTVs used for Srinagar security

(Srinagar):For the first time in Srinagar, CCTV cameras are being used to monitor suspicious movements in sensitive areas like Lal Chowk which has in the past been a target of terrorist attacks.As many as 16 close-circuit cameras have been installed as part of new security measures in the state to fight terrorism.

"We have installed hidden cameras at several places. The main objectives of these is to monitor suspicious movements so that we can react immediately," said Munir Khan, SSP, Srinagar.For several weeks now, policemen have been carrying out surprise checks and searches in Srinagar to try and keep out militants.

High alert — All entry routes to Srinagar city are being closely monitored and the five-kilometre area around Bakshi Stadium, which is the venue for Republic Day celebrations, has been sealed.With hundreds of policemen patrolling the area, the place has become a virtual fortress. "We have made security arrangements in the entire district by way of night domination, by way of patrolling, by way of other searches of grey areas and suspected areas," added Khan. After last year’s bomb blast on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations outside Bakshi Stadium, security forces are taking no chances.Srinagar has been put on high alert to ensure incident free Republic Day celebrations.
