9 Prisoners set free


Mysore, Jan. 27 (BRS)- In a rare gesture, the Government set free on Republic Day yesterday, nine prisoners undergoing life imprisonment for the past ten years in Mysore Central jail.

The Government had issued orders for the release of 12 prisoners from the Mysore Central Jail on Republic Day. However, all but three of them, who were unable to remit the fines ordered by the Court, were set free yesterday by the Prison authorities.

The nine prisoners were freed for good conduct during their jail term.

They are: Mari Gowda, 51 of Heerekati in Nanjangud Taluk, Ravi, 28 of Sosale in T. Narasipur, Mariappa, 46 of Belthangadi in Dakshina Kannada, Ijaz Sherif, 41 of Doddinduvadi in Kollegal, Vijaya alias Vijaya Kumar, 33 of Holenarasipur, Devaraju, 42 of Bogadi in Mysore, Safiulla Khan, 28 alias Safi of Shanthinagar, Mohammad Siddiqui, 29 of Mandi Mohalla, Mysore and Basavaraje Gowda, 67 of Salundi village in Mysore taluk.

The three prisoners who were not released because they were unable to pay the fine were Syed Abdul Razat, 29 of Mysore City, Dodda Byralingaiah, 41 of Saragur in H.D. Kote taluk and N.M. Shivaramu, 67 of Gheraje village in Madikeri.

Jail Superintendent Vishwanathaiah bid farewell to the nine prisoners. Former Mayor Dakshinamurthy advised the freed prisoners to pursue righteous path in life. He also distributed sweets to the prisoners.
