Court frames charges in Safdarjung rape case

New Delhi, Jan. 29 (PTI): A Delhi court on Saturday framed charges of rape against the accused in the Safdarjung Hospital rape case in the capital last year.

Additional Sessions Judge S P Garg, charged main accused Sanjay alias Sonu with rape, criminal intimidation and robbery, while co-accused Hari Om, was charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property.

This development comes just over a month after the police filed a report in the case stating that the DNA samples of the prosecutrix did not match with that of the accused. According to complaint registered with the Sarojini Nagar police station, the incident took place on September 14, 2005 on the fifth floor of the OPD at Safdarjung Hospital in south Delhi, where the victim was allegedly raped and robbed of her jewelery by a man at knife-point.

Two days later, on September 16, Sanjay, a resident of Shahpur Jat, was arrested in connection with the case after the victim allegedly identified him as the rapist.  On Sanjay’s disclosure, police then arrested Hari Om, from whose possession they claimed to have recovered the robbed jewelery in melted form.

According to defence counsel Gyanendra Singh, Sanjay has been in judicial custody since the time of his arrest, while Hari Om is at presently out on bail.he case comes up for hearing next on February 18, when the prosecutrix has been called to court to identify the accused
