KOLKATA, Jan. 27. — Three monks from Bihar, who had come to join a religious congregation at Sodepur, were burnt to death after a fire broke out in a tent put up on the roof of an incomplete building on Wednesday night. Fifteen fire engines were pressed into action to douse the fire. A burning oven is believed to have caused the fire, police said.
The deceased were identified as Baba Din Dayal (36), Baba Bhubneswar (70) and Satish Baba (37), police said. The incident occurred late into the night on Wednesday when some people, who had come to Sodepur to join a religious function, were asked to put up on the rooftop of a house.
The fire is suspected to have originated from an oven that was lit to keep the place warm. The flames spread rapidly and engulfed the entire area.Locals first spotted the fire and raised an alarm. Armed with buckets full of water, locals rushed to the spot and rescued some people trapped inside. The fire brigade reached the spot within a few hours and brought the fire under control.
The injured persons were removed to a local hospital where they died within a few hours, police said. — SNS
