Human rights violations rampant: Judge
Pathanamthitta: Pathanamthitta District and Sessions Judge E Mideen Kunju said human rights violations were rampant in the country because of the mind set of the individuals rooted in arrogance. He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘human rights and police’ organised by the Kerala Police Association, here. He said those who possessed muscle-power had the audacity to commit any kind of human rights violation with impunity. This scenario made the role of police as protector of human rights relevant. But police had to be careful in functioning within the framework of legal system, the Judge said.
At the same time, he said, it was imperative to debate the human rights of police force also. Police had to strive to acquire a ‘human face,’ he said. To arrest the ever increasing cases of criminal offences in the state, it was necessary to enhance the strength of police four-fold, he said, adding the universal norm of 8-hour-duty a day should be enforced.
