OIC, The Organization of the Islamic Conference is working to formulate a new criterion for embracing non-Muslim countries with sizeable Muslim population as observers.
According to the Daily Times here on Saturday, the OIC Secretariat had not received any fresh request to grant observer status to India. However, it added that India was lobbying with member countries to secure observer status in the platform.
The daily said that the issue of granting observer status to India came under discussion on the sidelines of the OIC extraordinary summit held last month.
Saudi King Abdullah, during his recent visit to India, also proposed that Pakistan sponsor a move to grant observer status to New Delhi.
India could get the status considering the fact that it had a Muslim population of 150 million.
Russia also enjoys observer status in the OIC.
