New surveillance system for Delhi

The Ministry of Science and Technology is developing a key software combining remote sensing satellite imagery, video pictures and ground data to create 3D images of Delhi. It will be an eye in the sky keeping a close watch on happenings on the ground. The technology developed by Russian Academy of Sciences will provide every detail of the city – from roads and by lanes to buildings and even encroachments. The real time images also allow movements to be monitored.
The Rs five crore pilot project to be completed in six months will cover a 20-km radius in Old Delhi including Chandni Chowk and Pragati Maidan. Science Minister Kapil Sibal says the entire city will be covered in time for the Commonwealth Games. Many nations in the world use geographical information systems to manage their cities but whether Delhi will join their ranks will depend on its politicians and the public.
