Accused in South African model’s rape case seek bail
Suresh Krishnani and Sunil Morpani, accused of raping a South African model have questioned the police allegations of rape. In the bail application filed in the sessions court, the duo wondered why the victim did not raise an alarm while being taken from Hotel Bawa in Vile Parle to Kalyan. There were three toll stations and the vehicle stopped at several traffic signals, and she could have raised an alarm they have said. They have also questioned why no alarm was raised by the hotel staff when the girl was being taken out. The application also questions the investigation and asks why the police did not interrogate the hotel staff who can tell them whether or not the girl was taken away by force. The duo according to the police, spiked her drink at the hotel pub, kidnapped and raped her in a car. They took her to a hotel in Kalyan and raped her again. When the woman regained consciousness, the two men allegedly assaulted her with belts and she fell unconscious, according to the police.
The matter has been adjourned to February 2 as the prosecution sought time to file reply. The victim’s lawyer, Falguni Brahmabhatt pleaded with the court to give time to appoint a senior counsel as special public prosecutor in the case and only then hear the bail application. Judge B M Jethani rejected this plea saying, “A senior counsel cannot change the FIR.”
