Women prepare model nikahnamah
Will serve as an alternative to the one passed by male-dominated All-India Muslim Personal Law Board last year, as it was anti-women

Lucknow: Roping in eminent personalities, the All-India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) is in the process of formulating a model ‘nikahnamah’, which it says would be in keeping with the shariat (Islamic law) and devoid of gender bias.
“The board has already rejected the model ‘nikahnamah’ (marriage certificate) passed by the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) last year as it was against women, and constituted an advisory committee that includes eminent male scholars to ward off any accusation that it is biased towards women,” AIMWPLB president Shaista Amber said on Tuesday. Soon after rejecting the AIMPLB’s version, the board had announced that it would prepare a ‘nikahnamah’ of its own that would be in keeping with Muslim personal laws. She said Lokayukt of Uttaranchal Haider Abbas Raza, Uttaranchal Haj Committee chairman Maulana Zahid Razi, several advocates of the Supreme Court and high courts, intellectuals and social workers had been holding consultations on the issue and the result would be announced at the board meeting on Thursday.
The ‘nikahnamah’ would focus on ‘checking malpractices like pronouncing talaq (divorce) through SMS, e-mail or telephone anywhere and anytime’, Amber said adding that it would have explicit details regarding ‘talaq’, ‘nikah’ (marriage) and ‘mehar’ (the amount promised by a husband to his wife when he enters matrimony).
Amber said the board had not been on a collision course with the AIMPLB or the ulemas (Muslim scholars). During its one year of existence, it had ‘earnestly tried to redress the problems of women’.
