Harassed for dowry, two women kill themselves

Two women, both in their 20s, today committed suicide in West and North-West Delhi allegedly due to dowry demands by their inlaws.

In the first incident, Amarpreet Kaur (28) allegedly doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze at about 0930 hrs at her ‘C’ Block Tilak Vihar residence in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area, according to sources. She was rushed to the hospital but reported ‘brought dead’.

Married to Gurwant two-and-a-half years back Amarpreet, who hailed from Haryana, had a one-and-a-half-year-old son. Her relatives later told mediapersons that she was being regularly harassed for bringing a car and had been murdered. In the second incident, 24-year-old Sarika reportdly hanged herself at her maternal home in Pitampura under Shalimar Bagh police station at about 1400 hrs. Her husband Vipul, a resident of Majlis Park and who worked at Gol Mandi, had ‘left’ her for the last six months as she could not fulfil his dowry demands, according to neighbours.

Out of frustration at being ‘abandoned’ by her husband for the last six months she took the extreme step, they added. Married two years back, Sarika has a one-year-old daughter, sources added.
