Thiruvananthapuram: With Emirates, an airline of the UAE, beginning flights between here and Dubai on Thursday, the international airport in the State capital is set to get a big boost. These flights offer 2,005 more seats every week to either destination.
Also, the airline will be able to provide connectivity to various destinations from its international hub in Dubai to passengers from Thiruvananthapuram, other southern districts of the State and neighbouring Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. The first flight, EK 522, of the airline from Dubai will touch down at the airport here at 3.15 a.m. on Thursday.
The airline is deploying Airbus 330-200, with a seating capacity of 237 passengers, for the inaugural flight, carrying an entourage of dignitaries and passengers. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, along with other dignitaries from Dubai, is flying down to the capital on Thursday evening on a chartered flight, to celebrate the launch. The Airbus 330-200 aircraft will be used for seven flights and a Boeing 777-200 for the eighth service every week.
The total weekly seating capacity on the Airbus flights is 1,659 and on Boeing aircraft 346, the airline says.
According to the schedule released by the airline, the flight EK 520 will depart from Dubai on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 3.25 p.m. (local time) to reach Thiruvananthapuram at 8.45 p.m. (IST).
The flight EK 522 will depart from Dubai on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 9.55 p.m. (local time) and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 3.15 a.m. (IST) The flight EK 523 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday will depart from Thiruvananthapuram at 4.30 a.m. (IST) and reach Dubai at 7.05 a.m. (local time). The flight EK 521 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will depart from here at 10 p.m. (local time) to reach Dubai at 00.35 hours (IST).
