Women's groups urge FM to introduce gender budgeting methodologies

New Delhi: Several women’s organisations, including AIDWA, today met Finance Minister P Chidambaram and urged him to ensure a legitimate budget allocation for women this year.They submitted a memorandum with 13 point charter of demands and urged Mr Chidambaram to follow through on last years commitment to introduce gender budgeting methodologies.

The delegation comprised Brinda Karat (MP), AIDWA members Subhashini Ali and Sudha Sundaraman, CWDS representative Indrani Mazumdar, SAMA member Sarojini and AIWC’s Manorama Bawa besides others.They highlighted the need to fulfill the commitments mentioned in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) to strengthen the PDS by increased budgetary allocation and demanded that food subsidies not be curtailed.”We request you to uphold the promise contained in the CMP, and ensure that the interest of the poor and marganilised are protected by the policy directions adopted in the budget,” the memorandum said.
