Dalit marriage procession disrupted, tension in Meerut

Meerut, Feb 03: Primary schools and markets remained closed as tension gripped the old city area today after some youths allegedly disrupted a marriage procession of Dalits and roughed up the bride and groom late last night.

Ten people, named in an FIR by the bride’s brother, had been arrested and police, RAF and PAC personnel were deployed around Mehmoodnagar locality to maintain calm, District Magistrate Ram Kishan said.

The trouble erupted after some youths allegedly disrupted a ‘Baraat’ (marriage procession) that arrived at the Valmiki Dharamshala in Lisari Gate area at around 11 pm last night, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajiv Sabharwal said.

He said the youths misbehaved with the bride and groom, leading to an altercation.

Police rushed to the are and brought the situation under control, he said adding that they arrested three persons on the spot. The other seven were arrested today.

Shops in the area downed shutters in the morning but reopened after assurances from the district administration and the Dm had initiated efforts to pacify the Valmiki Samaj.

Kishan said most nursery and primary schools in the city were closed due to a suo motu decision taken by the principals and added that the administration had issued no directives for immediate closure of the schools.

BJP city MLA Lakshmi Kant Bajpai alleged that incidents of eve-teasing had gone up ever since the police began toeing a softer line after the controversial "Operation Majnu".
