Ranchi: A Dalit was beaten to death by upper caste men when he tried to take water from a well in a Jharkhand village that had been simmering with caste tension, reports reaching here on Saturday said
According to local media reports, Rajkumar of Dhobini village in Giridih district, 190 km from Ranchi, was beaten up brutally on January 28 and succumbed to his injuries two days later. His body was finally cremated on Wednesday.
His crime — Rajkumar had gone to fetch a bucket of water from the well at a time when caste tension had been prevailing in the village for a few weeks.Three people from an upper caste beat him up brutally, reports said. When he fell unconscious, they admitted him to a local nursing home saying he had fallen from a tree. He died on January 30. Village members tried to settle the issue by saying his widow would be compensated. Upper caste members assured her Rs 70,000 in cash and a piece of land, the reports said. But according to local media reports, the widow has neither been given compensation nor been allowed to approach police to register a case.
