Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 6 (PTI): Eminent Malayalam writer and literary critic Professor S Guptan Nair, who dominated Kerala’s cultural sphere for over half-a-century, died in a hospital here today, family sources said.
Nair, 87, is survived by wife, a son and two daughters. He had been suffering from health-related problems for the last few weeks. Known for his thorough understanding of ancient, classical and modern literature, Nair always wrote in a simple and lucid style even when he dealt with abstruse literary topics.
Nair was a recipient of the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award and Kerala Government’s highest literary prize Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. He had also served as President of Kerala Sahitya Academy.
His widely read works include ‘Isangalkkappuram,’ Kranthadarsikal, Tagore–Kaviyum Manushyanum and Adhunika Sahityam. His recently published memoirs entitled "Mansasmarami" was a widely acclaimed work.
