Sukhadeo Thorat, an economics professor with the capital’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was Monday appointed chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Thorat, a member of the UGC, the government body on higher education, was promoted to the post, replacing N. Rajashekharan Pillai.
"Thorat is an economist of international repute and an expert on agriculture. His elevation to the post of UGC chairman is a welcome decision," Muralidhar Vemuri, one of his colleagues at JNU, told IANS. The new UGC chairman has over 25 years of academic experience and has also been associated with the Washington-based International Food Research Institute.
As an expert of dry land agriculture, he has presented a number of research papers in India and abroad.
