All India Christian Council (AICC) General Secretary Abraham Mathai claimed victory over the Gujarat High Court order directing the Gujarat government to promulgate Section 144 CrPC in Dangs district, focus of the Vanvasi Kalyan Parishad (VKP) sponsored three-day Shabri Kumbh Mela beginning from February 11.
Speaking to newspersons on Tuesday, he said Home Minister RR Patil too has ordered district administrations in Nasik and Nandurbar to clamp prohibitory orders in border regions with Gujarat. Mathai claimed that the VKP was trying to forcibly reconvert the Dang tribals to Hindu faith. Accusing the local Gujarat administration of being hand-in-glove with Sangh affiliates, Mathai claimed that the VKS was raking up communal passions by portraying the church as the evil force.
He said the Gujarat HC in its order has directed the Gujarat government to provide protection to all churches and Christian institutions, that all weapons be deposited with the district administration, deployment of para-military forces and round the clock power supply and action against those making provocative speeches.
Samsung Christian AICC joint secretary said the Sangh outfits were trying to inflame local passions by making provocative speeches against missionaries.
