CHANDIGARH: The gruesome murders of a senior retired Indian Air Force officer, his wife and sister here left city residents in shock on Tuesday. Group Captain T.P. Singh, his wife Shivani and his sister were found dead in their Sector 34 house. Police officials investigating the triple murder said all three had been shot at close range and then stabbed in various parts of their bodies, including the eyes. The neck of Singh’s sister was slashed.
The shots were fired from a 9mm pistol, a weapon that cannot be sold to civilians and is used only by members of security forces. Singh’s Maruti Zen car was also missing from his house. The killings have shocked the people as Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, has a sizeable police presence in most areas of the city. Police officers investigating the crime said Singh’s servant had been taken into custody. He told investigating officers that Singh’s family used to lock him in his room before going to sleep every night. The servant said he had heard shrieks from the house and looked out. He saw the car being taken out and thought someone in the family was unwell and was being taken to hospital. He went back to sleep after that. The bodies of the victims were found after a few people whom Singh was to meet came looking for him. Seeing the house locked and some blood inside, they called the police. However, the police officials found nothing amiss Area residents again called the police after some time and the locked house was broken into and the bodies were found. The triple murder was preceded on Monday by at least four crimes, including the looting of a petrol pump, snatching of jewellery from a woman and a burglary.
