UN body launches project to counter human trafficking

New Delhi: UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Tuesday launched its anti-human-trafficking programme in association with the governments of India and the US. The US government will provide a help of over $2 million for the project that would be implemented in the states of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Goa and Andhra Pradesh.
"Trafficking in persons is a human tragedy that requires international cooperation," said Robert O. Blake, deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy. He added that through a series of programmes over a two-year period, the project will provide training to raise awareness among law enforcement officers of human trafficking and strengthen their capacity to investigate and prosecute traffickers. The US Department of State’s Office of Global Trafficking in Persons funds over $50 million in anti-trafficking programmes in India and elsewhere in the world.
