Ahmedabad: Gujarat police will reopen 1,594 cases, including 13 new ones, of post-Godhra riots following directives of the Supreme Court.
Action will also taken against nearly 40 police officials for their roles in the riots, highly placed sources said here on Wednesday.
The details of re-opening of cases will be listed in the action taken report (ATR) of the post-Godhra communal riots inquiry committee which would be submitted to the Supreme Court on February 12, Gujarat Director General of Police A.K. Bhargav said here.
Bhargav, who is heading the committee formed following the directives of the Supreme Court, said the ATR will consist of all the progress made in this direction.
The committee submits its report to SC quarterly.The apex court had directed the state government to re-examine about 2,000 post-Godhra riots cases. The ATR will consist of details of the action taken against erring officials and as many as 550 persons who were involved in these cases, and will be arrested. Earlier, the court had taken stringent note of the closure of post-Godhra cases and directed the state government to reopen around 2,000 cases.
