Kerala's public debt touches Rs 44,300 crores

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman told the state Assembly on Wednesday that the state’s public debt stood at Rs 44,300 crore as on December 2005.Winding up the three-day debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, he said the increase in public debt was less when compared to the rule of the previous Left Democratic Front.The increase was only 85 per cent now against 137 per cent during the LDF regime, he claimed.Purushothaman said as 92 per cent of the State’s revenue were being spent on employees salary and pension and interest payment, there was no alternative other than taking loans.
