Tipper lorry claims another life

Thiruvananthapuram: A 30-year-old motorist was killed when the car he was driving collided head-on with a tipper lorry near Vazhamuttom, on the Kazhakkuttom-Inchivila NH 47 bypass, on Wednesday.

According to the traffic police, the deceased had been identified as D. Jose, an administrative staff of St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Nalanchira, and a resident of Chittazha, near Vattapara, in the suburbs.

The accident occurred when the car tried to overtake another vehicle, the police said. In the process, it collided with the tipper lorry. Jose was killed on the spot, the police said. The traffic police have taken the tipper lorry into custody. The driver of the vehicle fled from the spot. The traffic police have registered a case under Section 304 of the IPC against the driver. The body of Jose, a bachelor, was handed over to relatives after the post-mortem at Medical College Hospital.

Following the accident, the traffic police launched a crackdown on tipper lorries in the city. As many as 12 tipper lorries were taken into custody by the north and south wings of the traffic police for rash and negligent driving. The tipper lorries were let-off after a penalty of Rs.1,000 each was levied.

Council resolution The City Corporation Council on Wednesday urged the Government to take stern measures to check the spate of accidents caused by the speeding of tipper lorries. The council adopted a resolution by Vazhuthacaud ward councillor Rakhi Ravikumar calling for a ban on the movement of lorries within the city during daytime and the introduction of speed radars to detect speeding.
