THALASSERY: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here has sentenced Nalini, sister of Manichan, who was involved in the Kalluvathukkal liquor tragedy case, to one month’s simple imprisonment and a fine amounting to Rs 3,000, disposing of a case of defamation filed by CPM state committee member P Sasi.The judgment was suspended by the court to enable Nalini to file an appeal against the verdict in the District Court here. She was released on bail following the suspension of the sentence.
Nalini’s counsel Babu Chirayinkeezh said that an appeal will be filed in the District Court here within a week.The case of defamation was filed by P Sasi following an accusation made by Nalini, while addressing newspersons at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, that the former had demanded a huge amount of money from Manichan to exclude him from the Kalluvathukkal liquor tragedy case.P. Sasi was the political secretary of former chief minister E K Nayanar when the liquor tragedy shocked the state.
Nalini had also accused Sasi of having made a bid to make a liquor business deal with Manichan, reportedly in the course of her news conference at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club.Nalini made this serious allegation after Manichan was arrested in the liquor tragedy case. Sasi reacted filing a case stating that Nalini’s charges were defamatory to him. The court had examined the CD produced by a private news channel, which had telecast the news conference during which Nalini had made the accusation against P Sasi. Nalini left the court premises immediately after she was granted bail by the court
