A Chartered Accountant of Sujata Nikhalje, wife of underworld don Chhota Rajan, was arrested on Friday under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on the charge of aiding and abetting activities of the organised crime syndicate.
The chartered accountant Bharat Tulani, dealing with real estate firms allegedly owned by Sujata Nikalje, was arrested under MCOCA in an extortion case. Tulani was produced before a special court of designated judge Ashok Bhangale who remanded him to police custody till February 22. Tulani is perhaps the first chartered accountant to be booked under MCOCA for lending professional assistance to underworld figures and their family members, police said. In December last year, Sujata and three others were arrested and booked under MCOCA for allegedly extorting builders in Chembur and Kurla areas and also undertaking reconstruction of old buildings using ill-gotten money of her husband.
According to police, Rajan was holed up in a foreign country and as per his instructions, Sujata allegedly indulged in extortion by forcing builders to pay money. Police suspect that Tulani knows about the illegal transactions of Sujata and believe that his custodial interrogation would reveal the Rajan syndicate’s actitivies concerning extortion. Police said the Rajan gang had created a reign of terror in Chembur and Kurla areas by terrorising builders as real estate prices in these localities are going up. Meanwhile, Sujata continues to be in custody and the court has earlier rejected her bail plea.
