Cop torments wife for dowry; escapes arrest

In a case of the guardians of law showing scant regard for the law, a policeman has escaped arrest on charges of tormenting his wife for dowry. Pradeep Nath, a constable in Puri town, 56 km from here, allegedly frequently beat his 23-year-old wife Sanjukta Nath of Mangalaghat village, the Oriya daily Dharitri reported Friday. Matters came to a head Nov 7 when Pradeep allegedly thrashed her and forced her and their minor son out of the house when she refused to bring dowry, the daily said. Sanjukta rushed to the nearest police station in Puri town seeking help, but the policemen allegedly did not register her complaint.

On Thursday, Sanjukta, now living with her parents, came to Puri for her son’s treatment who was ill. Her husband came to meet them. Pradeep allegedly slapped his wife in the hospital and beat her at a chemist’s shop too. When she went to lodge a complaint at the same police station, Pradeep allegedly slapped her in the presence of the policemen, the daily said. After repeated requests, the police finally registered a complaint but did not arrest him
