Govt to bear fees of mentally disabled students: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government will pay the fees for blind, deaf and dumb and mentally disabled students after fixing a special fee structure for them, State Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman said in his budget speech today.

Presenting the budget, he said Rs five crore had been earmarked for the purpose and a survey would be conducted for finding out the right person. Mr Purushothaman said to improve the nutritional status of children below six years, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, the government would be implementing ”Malnutrition free Kerala” scheme in the state.Besides enhancing the state share in Anganwai Welfare Fund, the government also decided to increase the honourarium payable to Anganwadi workers and helpers by Rs 100.Taking on account of the condition of old age people in the state, he said the government would come out with an ” old age policy”.
Non-governmental organisations would be encouraged to set up and run model old age homes in partnership with Social Welfare Departments and Local Self Government Institutions, he added.
