Journalists start stir against attack on scribe

Imphal : The media fraternity of Manipur began a sit-in protest today at Keishampat here to protest the attack on Ratan Luwangcha, general secretary of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and chief of bureau of Poknapham, a local vernacular daily. Ratan was kept under tight security at the Shija hospital here after he sustained three bullet injuries yesterday.

He was shot at by three unidentified gunmen near the gate of his residence at Uripok, here. The AMWJU and the Editors’ Forum, Manipur, who organised the protest, announced that publication of all newspapers would stop from today until a clarification was made by those responsible for the attack. All the editorials went blank today to protest the attack. The two organisations said if no clarification was made, no press hand-outs of any underground group would be published. The journalists had also staged a protest yesterday wearing black ribbons and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister. Meanwhile, many organisations issued condemnation statements. State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had assured to provide security to the injured journalist.
