Adivasi Morcha demands National Rehabilitation Policy

Bhubaneshwar — Adivasi Adhikar Manch (ADM) today demanded a national rehabilitation policy with legislation which could provide social security to the tribals displaced in various projects in the country.

Until the policy was formulated and the law passed in Parliament, all land acquisition tribals would not be forced to evacuate for developmental projects, ADM Chief Convener and former MP Salkhan Murmu said.

Mr Murmu, who presided over a tribal convention here on the eve of the Orissa unit formation, said, ”No rehabilitation policies could solve the problems of the tribals unless we have the legislation to ensure its implementation.” He said the state rehabilitation policies would not address the problems of the displaced tribals but they could contribute on the formulation of a national policy.

Mr Murmu said both Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had shown good gesture by formulating new rehabilitation policies for their respective states but such a policy would not serve the purpose.

He demanded that the national policy must incorporate the views of the tribals who have been affected by the project.

He said the ADM would gherao Orissa Assembly on February 21 and Jharkhand Assembly on March 3 and organise a massive rally in Delhi on April 4 in support of its demand for a national rehabilitation policy.

Mr Murmu said the Morcha has appealed to the President of India so that the tribal leaders across the country under the banner of the ADM would apprise him the condition of the adivasis
