KOCHI: The police on Wednesday arrested three persons on charges of assaulting mediapersons while they were taking photographs of illegal filling up of paddy field near Irumpanam.
According to the police, K.G. Dileep Kumar, photographer, and Sankarankutty, reporter of Kerala Kaumudi daily were taking pictures near Makaliyam temple, Irumpanam, on Tuesday evening when eight persons attacked them. They tried to destroy the camera and forcibly deleted the pictures taken.
The police arrested Abhilash, Sajan Jose and Sanal, all belonging to Irumpanam, on Wednesday. These three were the main accused, others not having an active participation in the incident, said the police. Two motorcycles used by the accused were also taken into custody.
The district committee of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists convened an emergency meeting to protest against the incident. The union has filed complaints to District Collector, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ernakulam Range, and the City Police Commissioner.
