NEW DELHI, Feb. 15. —— The government today informed the Supreme Court that members of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities would collect more information on granting Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians after visiting some states.
Additional Solicitor General Mr Gopal Subra-manian submitted before a Bench of Chief Justice Mr YK Sabharwal, Mr Justice CK Thakker and Mr Justice PK Balasubrama-nain that the commission would complete its task by March. The Supreme Court posted the matter for further hearing in the first week of April. The court is hearing a PIL seeking SC status for Dalit Christians who were SCs before the conversion.
A Division Bench of the Supreme Court has ruled that children born out of a marriage between a tribal woman and a non-tribal upper class man cannot claim status of Scheduled Tribe and seek jobs as such. The Bench said such offsprings cannot claim ST status as they were brought up in an upper class ambience. — PTI
