KENDRAPARA, Orissa, Feb. 15. — Sporadic incidents of violence marred the annual function of the Kendrapara Autonomous College students’ union today as rival factions of students fought a pitched battle and disrupted the function. The mayor of Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Miss Nivedita Pradhan, who graced the function as chief guest, was forced to leave the dais after strong opposition from a large number of students who protested against the exclusion of some students’ union office bearers from the function. They were protesting against the selection of guests on political lines.
The agitated students ransacked the place. As things threatened to go out of control, police was called in. The guests, including the Cuttack mayor, were later brought to back to the function with police security. Noisy scenes were witnessed as speakers addressed the motley gathering, comprising mostly college teachers. Some students were allegedly beaten up by a group of Sangh Parivar workers at the meeting venue. The incident was a fallout of the wrangling between local Sangh Parivar cadres and the BJP unit.
